How to Use the Time Calculator

Select the operation you want — Add, Subtract, Multiply, or Divide — then enter the time values in hours, minutes, and seconds. Results update instantly as you type and are shown as a breakdown of days, hours, minutes, and seconds.

Adding Time Durations

The Add operation totals any number of time durations from two up to ten. Click + Add time to add more rows. This is useful for:

  • Totaling work hours across multiple tasks or projects
  • Adding up lap times, split times, or session lengths
  • Calculating the total running time of a playlist, podcast series, or event schedule

Example: Three meetings last 45 minutes, 1 hour 10 minutes, and 30 minutes. Enter each and the total is 2 hours 25 minutes.

Subtracting Time

The Subtract operation finds the difference between two time values. Unlike the Date Calculator, this operates on pure durations rather than calendar dates.

If Time B is larger than Time A, the result is negative — the minus sign (−) appears above the result. This is useful for measuring how much a task ran over its target duration.

Example: A task was estimated at 2 hours but took 2 hours 40 minutes. Subtracting 2:00:00 from 2:40:00 gives a difference of 40 minutes.

Multiplying Time

The Multiply operation scales a duration by a number — whole or decimal. Use it when you need to calculate a total from a repeated duration.

Example: Each delivery route takes 22 minutes 30 seconds. Multiplying by 6 routes gives a total driving time of 2 hours 15 minutes.

Dividing Time

The Divide operation splits a total duration into equal parts. Use it to find a per-unit or per-person duration from a total.

Example: A 5-hour training session is spread equally across 4 days. Dividing 5 hours by 4 gives 1 hour 15 minutes per day.

Tips

  • Minutes and seconds must be between 0 and 59. Hours have no upper limit.
  • The multiplier and divisor can be decimals (e.g., 1.5, 0.25).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add multiple time durations together?

Select the Add operation, enter hours, minutes, and seconds for each row, and use the '+ Add time' button to add up to ten rows. The total updates instantly as you type and is displayed in days, hours, minutes, and seconds.

What if the total is more than 24 hours?

The result is automatically broken down into days, hours, minutes, and seconds. For example, a total of 30 hours is shown as 1 day and 6 hours.

Can the subtraction result be negative?

Yes. If Time B is larger than Time A, the result is a negative time difference shown with a minus sign (−) above the result cards. This is useful for measuring how much an estimate or schedule was exceeded.

How does multiplying time work?

Enter a time duration and the number to multiply by. For example, if one lap takes 1 minute 45 seconds and you want the total for 8 laps, enter 0h 1m 45s and multiply by 8 — the result is 14 minutes.

Can the multiplier be a decimal number?

Yes. You can multiply by any decimal. For example, multiplying 2 hours by 1.5 gives 3 hours.

What is time division used for?

Dividing a total duration by a number gives the duration per unit. For example, dividing a 3-hour project by 4 team members shows that each person works 45 minutes.

How are fractional seconds handled?

All results are rounded to the nearest whole second. Fractional seconds can appear when multiplying or dividing, but the displayed result is always a whole number of seconds.

Can I add negative hours or minutes?

All individual time inputs (hours, minutes, seconds) must be zero or positive. To work with negative durations, use the Subtract operation — if Time B exceeds Time A, the result is shown as negative.
